According to research by the nutritional center of Ho Chi Minh City, cashew nuts are foods with high nutritional value, low glycemic index, contributing to the prevention of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity.

Vietnam Agriculture newspaper met with Dr. Do Thi Ngoc Diep, director of HCM City Nutrition Center on the study results:

In Vietnam, the proportion of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity ... is growing rapidly. The main reason why this happened, Doctor?

The increasing trend of this disease not only in VN but also in many countries around the world. However, the rate of increase in these diseases in developing countries such as VN is higher than in developed countries.

Currently the incidence of diabetes at 5.7% VN equivalent of 4 million people (in Hanoi and HCMC higher morbidity rate from 1.5 to 2 times the national average). In particular, the rate of increase in diabetes in our country of over 100% (calculated for 10-year cycle).

The main cause is due to improper diet, sedentary, drink more alcohol, tobacco and improper lifestyle (stress, staying up late ...).

Currently, the diet of people VN calculated level of countries achieve common good structure, the proportion of biomass energy lies in the standard structure. But if in the local populations and different groups of people, it appeared there was wrong diet, focusing mainly in urban areas. This group was the highest non-communicable diseases by eating a lot of energy, protein, fats than demand.

They found a clear association of people with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, some cancers are caused by eating too much energy, more protein and fats of animal origin (special especially red meat) cause obesity and lead to the risk of subsequent diseases.

As a precaution, consumers should pay attention in choosing foods, doctor?

Every day, if we are interested in foods that balance right, especially choosing foods low glycemic index (glycemic index less than 55%) will be very good for health. The first benefit is not quickly raise blood sugar levels after eating. From this factor will help the body maintain stable blood sugar levels, reduce the risk of obesity, decreasing the risk of dyslipidemia.

Foods with a low glycemic index falls on carbohydrate-rich group, in its component fiber, eg nuts, cashew nuts, milk, no sugar, no fat, fruit ...

We knew that HCM City Nutrition Center research results on the nutritional value of the nut, applied in dietary health protection. Specific benefits are, doctor?

Energy-rich nuts than other foods such as cereals, meat, fish ... As per 100g cashew provide 550-600 kcal, while cereal only provide 300-350 kcal, meat group provides 150-200 kcal.

Protein components in individual accounts for 18-20% of the volume, or the amount of protein in meat and fish. About 80% of the fat in nuts is that unsaturated fats (reduces Cholestorol), which mainly oleic fatty acids, fats are recommended as a source of energy to replace the saturated fat or alternative sources of carbohydrate in the diet of people with dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease or diabetes with persistent high blood triglycerides.

Glycemic index of individual belonging to low levels can be used as part of a healthy diet. Cashews instead choose foods are not good for health as fatty meats, fast foods contain saturated fats have no health benefits is one of the nutritional interventions for people who need to control energy.

I know, in Australia and the Nordic countries have put cashews to guide recommendations on nutrition for the community. The World Association has also studied and made recommendations, every day a person should eat 30 grams of nuts (including nuts), then after a while will reduce the risk of heart disease, dyslipidemia.

Also, in one week, consumers should eat 50% of the meals food of plant origin (choose soy, peanuts, cashews ...) instead of food of animal origin will help protect very good for health.

Thank you doctor!

"After the results of research, we have information and referral for staff working in the system of nutrition recommendations to put nuts in the map data foods with a low glycemic index, advising patient use. Center is also working to build a combination of cashews dishes have a low glycemic index to guide the community.

On a macro level, we believe that the Government and MARD should have media programs promoting the nutritional value of the nut to encourage people to use in the future" Dr. Do Thi Ngoc Diep .
